A Financial Citizen Series
Money
Under Law
Money does not move through empty space. It moves through law, technology, institutions, contracts and belief.
A lawyer examines money, crypto, companies, offshore finance, digital identity and the legal systems through which value moves.
The method
Every financial object has a surface and a structure.
The surface is what you are told you hold. The structure is what you actually hold, who controls it, and what happens when the arrangement fails. Choose an object.
- What it is
- Not money held for you in a box. It is a debt the bank owes you — you are an unsecured creditor of the institution, and the balance is the size of the claim.
- Who owns it
- The bank owns the funds. You own the claim against the bank.
- Who controls it
- The mandate on the account governs who may operate it. The claim can be restrained by court order, by regulatory direction, and in practice by the bank's own suspicion.
- Which law
- The account terms, and the law of the jurisdiction in which the branch sits — which is not always the jurisdiction you live in.
- When it fails
- You rank alongside other depositors. Deposit insurance answers only up to a statutory cap; above that line you are in the queue.
General explanation of legal structure · not advice on any account, token or holding
The interrogation
Ten questions, asked in order, of anything that carries value.
- 01What legal or financial object has been created?
- 02Who legally owns it?
- 03Who controls it in practice?
- 04What promise or institution supports its value?
- 05Which jurisdiction governs it?
- 06What contract exists behind it?
- 07What happens when the system fails?
- 08Who bears the loss?
- 09What is hidden from the ordinary participant?
- 10How does the structure distribute power?
The obvious question is usually financial. The question underneath it is almost always institutional.
Subjects
What the series examines.
cryptocurrency and digital assets · stablecoins, wallets, exchanges and custody · companies, shares, directors and corporate control · banking, payment systems and foreign exchange · offshore companies and international financial centres · trusts, foundations and asset protection · beneficial ownership and economic substance · taxation, planning and evasion · fraud, money laundering and financial crime · property, preservation and inheritance · artificial intelligence, avatars and digital identity · the contracts behind financial products · financial regulation in Nigeria, Africa and globally
Crypto is one part of a wider examination of money, not the centre of it.
Standing series
Seven lines of inquiry.
Crypto Under Law
Wallets, exchanges, stablecoins, custody, smart contracts, regulation, and what digital-asset ownership actually consists of.
Where Money Lives
Cayman, the Bahamas, Mauritius, Dubai, Singapore, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Delaware. Not places outside the law — choices about which law will contain a transaction.
The Contract Behind It
The agreements underneath bank accounts, stablecoins, platforms, shares, funds and avatars. Read after the fact, they explain most losses.
Company Anatomy
Shares, directors, subsidiaries, holding structures, investors. Ownership is not always control, and control is not always visible.
When the System Fails
Exchange collapse, frozen accounts, lost keys, failed funds, disputed transfers. Failure is where a structure finally states what it always was.
Legal Warning Signs
What to examine before signing, transferring, incorporating or investing — while the decision is still open.
AI, Avatars and Identity
Voice, likeness, biometric data, synthetic media, consent and impersonation. A digital likeness may imitate a person, but law determines who controls it.
Terms of the series
How this is made, and what it is not.
Presentation is synthetic, and disclosed
Episodes are delivered by an authorised AI-generated likeness of Paul Magaji, and in some editions by the licensed likeness of other contributors. Every script is written and approved under the editorial supervision of Money Under Law. The avatar is a production instrument. It is not an independent lawyer, and it has no experience of its own to recount.
Education, not advice
Nothing here is legal advice or investment advice, and nothing here creates a lawyer–client relationship. The series explains structures; it does not recommend transactions, assets, platforms or providers, and it makes no representation about returns.
No paid coverage
No asset, platform, exchange or provider is covered in exchange for payment, and no episode is undertaken at the request of a promoter. A series about concealed financial interest cannot keep any of its own.
Dated, and corrected in the open
Law changes. Each substantial item states the jurisdiction and the date to which the law is given. Where something is later found to be wrong, the correction is published against it rather than the item quietly removed.
Money Under Law is a series under Financial Citizen. Financial Citizen concerns intelligent participation in economic life; Money Under Law examines the laws, institutions and contracts governing that participation.
Professional legal services are provided separately by Magaji Law and are not offered through this series.
